U.S. Seizes Massive Oil Tanker in Bold Operation as Tensions With Venezuela Spike
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump confirmed that U.S. forces have seized what he called “the largest tanker ever taken,” off the coast of Venezuela.
The vessel, which was identified as the Skipper, is a Guyana-flagged VLCC that was loaded in secret with 1.1 million barrels of crude. It reportedly set course for Cuba after taking on oil from both Venezuela and Iran — both under heavy U.S. sanctions.
The seizure was carried out by federal agencies including the FBI, DHS, and the U.S. Coast Guard, with support from the Pentagon. Video shared by Attorney General Pam Bondi of the seizure shows soldiers boarding the ship by helicopter.
The tanker has long been subject to sanctions for participation in an illicit oil-shipping network linked with foreign terrorist organizations, according to U.S. officials.
This move comes as Trump ramps up pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, saying this week that “Maduro's days are numbered” and refusing to rule out further action.
Oil markets reacted right away:
WTI up +1.2% to $58.95
Brent up +1.15% to $62.65
Analysts say this seizure will make shippers far more cautious about moving Venezuelan crude, potentially reshaping regional oil flows.
